Experience the Nordic Cuisine at North Food Festival 2014 in New York City, September 12-20, 2014


NORTH Food Festival will return to New York City, September 12-20, 2014. The festival will bring together 32 Nordic inspired chefs, to create a series of special meals. The festival will also host a pop up in the Old Bowery Station which will change themes daily throughout the fest.

Honest Cooking, an award-winning international online culinary magazine is behind the concept of introducing the best tastes and talents from the Nordic region, and pairing these with local New York restaurants and professionals from the culinary field. During the festival there will be several events where one gets to taste, experience, and participate in the finesses of the Nordic food scene.

Participants come from Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

New Nordic Food and Nordic food culture has in recent years experienced a major boom and both the restaurant scene in the major cities in the Nordic region, as the interest from abroad towards Nordic food has grown dramatically. For example, several new restaurants have been established in Helsinki of Finland in the recent years and there are many food related special events and festivals going on throughout the year.

Cooking classes and special dinners


The Finnish Chef – Sami Tallberg

There are three established chefs from Finland that will partake in the festival. Chef and forager Sami Tallberg who has become a superstar in vegetarian cuisine through the creative use of wild foods will show how seasonal herbs and vegetables can be used to prepare a unique vegetarian meal. Mr Tallberg has written several acclaimed cookbooks on the subject and is the winner of the 2012 Finland Prize. He will present his cooking on Saturday, September 13 in the “Wild Finnish Cuisine” cooking class held at the Culinary Institute on Broadway.


The Finnish Chef – Sasu Laukkonen

The second Finnish cooking class, on the same day and location, will present Michelin-starred chef Sasu Laukkonen with the theme “Nordic Grandma Cooking”.

While the wonders of the New Nordic Cuisine have taken the world by storm, Mr Laukkonen will present the classic, delicious dishes that grandmothers around the region have cooked up for generations. Besides the cooking class where everyone gets to participate Chef Laukkonen will also host a special dinner in the beautiful pop up location on Bowery, with inspiring Finnish cooking and delicious drinks. The dinner will take place on September 15 and take you on a journey to Mr Laukkonen´s acclaimed restaurant Chef & Sommelier located in Helsinki. Chef & Sommelier was awarded its first Michelin star in March of this year.

Street food festival and Nordic Hot Dog Championships

Beyond cooking classes the festival features a Nordic street food event at the Brooklyn Brewery on Sunday, September 14 – a perfect match between food and tasty local beer. During the day Sami Tallberg will be serving up small bites of his favorite Scandinavian dishes, and later in the evening there will be the first ever Nordic Hot Dog Championships where the chefs get to invent their own Nordic style hot dogs. The winner will receive the honor of becoming the first Nordic Hot Dog Champion!


The Chef – Richard McCormick

The third chef representing Finland, Richard McCormick will also be present at the Finnish booth. Mr McCormick is the man behind six successful restaurants in Helsinki and a forerunner in the street food movement in Finland. With his vast experience in running restaurants around the world since he was 16 years he is a true food missionary.

This is the second annual NORTH Food Festival, showcasing amazing Nordic chefs, producers, and flavors, now in New York.

On the west coast, chefs and cooking classes will be popping up in Los Angeles throughout the year at Austere DTLA – a sleek Nordic lifestyle showroom in Downtown LA.

Taste, smell and see what Nordic gastronomy is all about at the largest Nordic Food Festival in the US.
