Cross-country skiing destinations in Norway

If you are looking for a beautiful landscapes, miles upon miles of prepared tracks and plenty of snow. Well, allowed me to present some of the best cross-country skiing destinations in Norway, like the Hemsedal area, which lies between Oslo and Bergen on the west coast of Norway (see the map).

Also, check out the area from the Jontuheimen and Rondane mountains to the Lillehammer and Røros areas. There are many cross-country destinations to choose from in Norway. To find out more, click here.

Let us introduce the Hemsedal  ski area

If you want to go cross-country skiing in Hemsedal, you can enjoy 120 kilometres of groomed cross-country tracks and 90 kilometres of mountain tracks in beautiful surroundings. At Ulsåkstølen, by the track “Helsingvatn rundt”, and the Flævasshytta Cabin (open from week 7), by the track “Beihovdløypa“, you can have a break and enjoy something hot to drink and a snack.

Off-piste skiing
Hemsedal is also well-known for its off-piste skiing. You can join a guided tour with for example “Norske Opplevelser” or “Norgesguidene“, and learn more about off-piste skiing and safety with a local guide to get the most out of it.

You must always remember to consider the avalanche risk and wear proper equipment when off-piste skiing. If you do not know the area, always ski with someone who does or hire a guide.

Off-piste skiing is always at your own risk. Skiing outside the groomed pistes of Hemsedal Skisenter and Solheisen Skisenter is also considered off-piste skiing.

Winter without skis
Besides skiing, there are plenty of other things to do in Hemsedal. Some of the most popular activities during the winter include:

  • Dog sledging with Hemsedal Huskies
  • Winter via ferrata (climbing route) with Norske Opplevelser
  • Snowshoeing with Norske Opplevelser
  • Ice climbing with Norske Opplevelser, Leslie Ayres or Norgesguidene (email:
  • Horse sleigh rides with Flaget Gård (phone: +47 91 51 70 82) and Hemsedal Hestesenter

Where to stay
When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of places to stay in Hemsedal. Enjoy ski in/ski out, for example at Skarsnuten Apartments or Veslestølen Cabins. Or choose among cosy apartments and cabins a little bit outside the ski resort, for example Storehorn or Hemsedal Hytte og Feriepark.

A free-of-charge ski bus service connects the accommodation areas and the slopes.

Dining and nightlife
In addition to skiing and other winter activities, there are many good restaurants in Hemsedal with well-known traditional kitchens serving dishes using local ingredients.

After a day’s skiing you should experience fun après-ski at for example Hemsedal Café, Skistua and Stavkroa. Later you can dance or just have something to drink at Fjellbekk Nightclub at Skogstad Hotell, Hemsen Nightclub and Bar[t].
