Eurovision Song Contest is one of Europe’s favorite TV show. After more than five decades featuring some 1,100 songs, the contest has become a modern classic, strongly embedded into Europe’s collective mind.

Eurovision Song Contest 2013

Eurovision Song Contest 2013 will be the 58th annual Song Contest. It will be held in Malmö Sweden, following Swedish’s win in the 2012 Contest with Loreen Talhaoui’s song “Euphoria.

Traditionally, the Eurovision Song Contest is being produced by the national public broadcaster of the country that won the year before. This year 2013, the Swedish public broadcaster, SVT, is taking care of the production, in close cooperation with the EBU and over 40 participating Member Broadcasters from across Europe.

Two semi-finals will be held on 14 May and 16 May 2013, and the final on 18 May 2013. Ten countries from each semi-final will qualify for the final and will be joined by Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom.

Thirty-nine countries have announced their participation in the contest this year.

In a meeting of the Eurovision Reference Group on 29 June 2011, it was decided that the televoting system would revert back to the 15-minute window between the 1998 Contest and 2009 Contest in which the phone and SMS lines will open after all songs have been performed instead of opening before the show starts, a system used between 2010 and 2011.

Results format of each show will remain the same with each country’s votes being decided on a 50:50 split between televoting and a national jury.

The “European Broadcasting Area” is bounded on the West by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the

meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the South by the parallel 30° North so as to include the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. That is also the reason why for example Israel can take part in the contest.

In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey and Ukraine lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area.

All the Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, will participate this year. Allow me to introduce in brief, each country and their artist.

Emmelie de Forest will represent Denmark in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with the song “Only Teardrops“.

Emmelie hasn’t even turned 20 and has already been an active singer for ten years. She has for example sung in church choirs and Steve Cameron’s gospel choir, and since Emmelie turned 14 she has been singing with the Scottish musician Fraser Neill. Together the duo has played and been singing for four years at various festivals, music venues and culture houses and Emmelie therefore has a lot of experience in her musical rucksack.

”When I turned 18 I packed up all my things and moved from Mariager in Northern Jutland to Copenhagen, where I was admitted to Katrine Sadlin’s ”Complete Vocal Institute” for singers. There I could sing uninterrupted and learnt a lot. During the last year I have worked, travelled, recorded, written loads of lyrics and played the guitar”, explains Emmielie.

Only Teardrops is a song that Emmelie has worked intensively with for a long time, and describes performing it as ”giving something back”.

”Only Teardrops has a really good melody and a good tempo. It also gives you something to think about; how we treat each other and the world. It is melancholic, but also gives hope for the future”, says Emmelie.

Emmelie de Forest will participate for Denmark in the first Semi-Final of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden on the 14th of May.

The ever energetic, non-stop performer Krista Siegfrids has claimed attention in the
Finnish music-industry for a few years now as a stage artist. Ranting about
a band of her own finally came to an end as the members hooked up and
started to work on some ideas, which was the birth of her pop/rock band Daisy Jack in 2009. The band released their first single, Perfect Crime, in october 2011. The urge to do her own thing became more important and today she’s a determined solo artist, currently working on her debut album.

Krista is a fantastic live artist and a great entertainer. She’s doing a lot of gigs around in Finland, but she’s also doing concerts and shows in other Nordic countries, such as Sweden and Norway.

Krista loves to combine her greatest interests in life; music, dancing and acting. She is a pure talent and she has been doing many variety shows, cabarets and musicals. She got her first musical role in the musical, Play Me (2009-2010) at the Swedish theatre in Helsinki. Right after that she was casted in the rock musical Muskettisoturit, (The three musketeers, 2011) at the finnish Peacock theatre in Helsinki. But it wasn’t until last spring 2012 she became a familiar face to the whole country. Krista became famous over one night in the tv success The Voice of Finland as the energetic and charming rock’n roll chick! In autumn 2012 she performed in The Cabaret Hou, hou Ihan mahdoton Kabaree, Go, go at the finnish Peacock theatre in Helsinki.

This spring Krista was one of the finalists in UMK 2013. She won the competition and in May 2013 she will be representing Finland in The Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

Eythor Ingi and family after his victory.

Eythor Ingi is an Icelandic singer born in Dalvik of North Iceland 1989. “Beginning in kindergarten I’ve been really busy to be an actor or singer. As a kid I watched a lot of movies with Elvis Presley and sang his songs on nursery in a very broken English. There are funny family videos from my childhood where I sing, for example, “Amon sick” which was supposed to be “All Shook Up” and tried to teach my parents how to shake like Elvis” says Eythor Ingi and laughs.

Eythor went to Akureyri in 2006, began studying high school of the VMA and won Song contest colleges on behalf of the school in 2007. “I just lull through one semester, took part in the race and then stopped almost immediately after it” says Eythor who in his own words has never been a great student, being detected with ADD and profound dyslexia. “I have made two unsuccessful attempts to learn music” he says, recalling his previous experiment.

“My grandfather is a great musician and can play to most of any instruments, despite having never learned a one. He has for many years being unable to read music, so I decided to learn the accordion so I could teach him. It worked Not quite as expected because I never watched the music notation, just played by ear” he says laughing.

Despite being nothing learned in music sings Eythor as professional and plays both guitar and piano. Skills he says, have come with experience. “I’m very aware of what I do and even I begin to understand things slowly” he says.

Submit the final version for the contest in Malmö in mid-March. Eythor says not prepared to take any decisions on changes, but it can however confirm that his hair will not be cut. “Everything else is open” he says and laughs.

Thus there are exciting times ahead for this young and talented man who promises that although he is nowhere near hazards. “I’m far from ready to peak in my life, I’m just getting started.”
