Eurovision Song Contest is one of Europe’s favorite TV show. After more than five decades featuring some 1,100 songs, the contest has become a modern classic, strongly embedded into Europe’s collective mind.

Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Eurovision Song Contest 2012 will be the 57th annual Song Contest. It will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, following Azerbaijan’s win in the 2011 Contest with Eldar & Nigar’s song “Running Scared“. Two semi-finals will be held on 22 May and 24 May 2012, and the final on 26 May 2012. Ten countries from each semi-final will qualify for the final and will be joined by Azerbaijan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Forty-two countries have announced their participation in the contest, with Montenegro returning, having last taken part in 2009, with Poland and Armenia withdrawing.

In a meeting of the Eurovision Reference Group on 29 June 2011, it was decided that the televoting system would revert back to the 15-minute window between the 1998 Contest and 2009 Contest in which the phone and SMS lines will open after all songs have been performed instead of opening before the show starts, a system used between 2010 and 2011. Results format of each show will remain the same with each country’s votes being decided on a 50:50 split between televoting and a national jury.

The European Broadcasting Area

The “European Broadcasting Area” is bounded on the West by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the South by the parallel 30° North so as to include the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. That is also the reason why for example Israel can take part in the contest.

In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey and Ukraine lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area.

All the Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, will participate this year. Allow me to introduce in brief, each country and their artist, their lyrics and their Composer(s).

Soluna Samay will represent Denmark in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with the song “Should’ve Known Better“.  Composers: “Chief 1 & Remee” and Lyrics writer(s) “Chief 1, Remee & Isam B

Remée and Chief 1 first discovered Soluna Samay through the social medias when they were looking for a solo singer to perform their wild card entry at the Danish Melodi Grand Prix 2012. On the other hand they could easily have met Soluna on the street, where she often performs as a busker, both in Copenhagen and in other big cities around Europe. The 21-year-old singer/song writer has been doing this throughout her whole life, visiting many of the world’s continents, performing and singing her songs. Soluna Samay was born and raised in Guatemala, by her German father and her Swiss-German mother. At the age of 10 the family moved to Denmark, settling down on the small island of Bornholm.

Pernilla Karlsson will represent Finland in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with the song “Nar Jag Blundar” (Close Your Eyes). Composer: “Jonas Karlsson” and Lyrics writer “Jonas Karlsson

The 21-year-old singer Pernilla has a strong and emotional voice, which has received acclaim in Finland. “När Jag Blundar was written for my mother. I relate to the lyrics deeply and I hope this comes through in a universal way – after all, there is an instinctive bond between a mother and a child, regardless of whether they are present in each other’s lives or not. The song expresses gratitude for motherly love and understanding”, Pernilla says. När Jag Blundar was written by Pernilla’s brother Jonas Karlsson, who is an acclaimed producer in Finland. Pernilla belongs to the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland.

Greta Salóme & Jónsi will represent Iceland in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with the song “Mundu Eftir Mér” (Never Forget). Composer: “Gréta Salóme” and Lyrics writer “Gréta Salóme

Greta Salóme Stefánsdóttir was born in 1986. Music runs in the family as her mother Kristin Lilliendahl made some records in her teens, and her grandfather Karl Lilliendahl was a guitarist and renowned bandleader. Greta began her violin studies in 1991 when she was only four years old and has never looked back. At thirteen she entered Reykjavik College of Music. She is a professional musician and has a position as a violinist in the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra.

Jónsi, or to quote his full name, Jón Jósep Snaebjörnsson was born in 1977 in Akureyri the biggest town in northern Iceland. He started singing at an early age and took part in a national college song contest before moving to Reykjavik in 1997. Two years later he joined the soul orientated pop group ‘Í Svörtum Fötum’ who dressed in black suits and white shirts and started his singing and songwriting career.

Iranian-Norwegian Tooji will represent Norway in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with the song “Stay“. Composer(s): “Tooji, Figge Boström & Peter Boström” and Lyrics writer(s) “Tooji, Figge Boström & Peter Boström

Tooji was born in Shiraz in Iran in 1988. The family’s Persian traditions and roots have given Tooji strong references, both musically and personally. A good life with a close-knit family in a new country has influenced his upbringing and life choices since. With a strong wish to express impressions and feelings Tooji has gone his own creative ways, and after art school and theatre school, it was finally music that became closest to Tooji’s heart. In addition to devoting himself to his passions, the experience of working in kindergartens and with after-school-activities, young people and asylum seekers, has given Tooji an even more important mission in life: To give a voice to those who would otherwise not have been heard.

Loreen Talhaoui will represent Sweden in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with the song “Euphoria“. Composer(s): “Thomas G:son & Peter Boström” and Lyrics writer(s) “Thomas G:son & Peter Boström

Loreen (28) was raised on the countryside outside Stockholm, in a family of Moroccan-Berber origin. She has a very focused attitude to her music. She gets frustrated when she’s tagged as an R&B artist: ”It’s almost bizarre. I never listen to R&B or soul music!” She continues: ”The music I get inspiration from is music that gets you into kind of a trance. Both musically and vocal wise. Artists like Björk, some of Enya’s music, and especially Lisa Gerrard”.

Euphoria, written and produced by Peter Boström and Thomas G:son, is Loreen’s third single release and has already spent three weeks topping the Swedish charts quickly surpassing Platinum status.
